The Reed Cutter and Captain Shigemoto's Mother: Two Novellas
Published in Paperback by Vintage Books (July, 1995)
Average review score:

Tanizaki Is A Master of Insight Into Desire and LossTanizaki's later works continued to look back at a Japan which was being enveloped by the necessities and temptations of the West, militarism, and false [and conservative]myths about feudal Japan. I love Tanizaki's The Makioka Sisters (I think that book is his masterpiece) but I very much like these two stories, particularly Captain Shigemoto's Mother. The story of a man trying to understand how his mother came to be lost to him is intriguing and moving. I hope the Japanese never forget Tanizaki; unfortunately, Americans barely know who he is.

Running a Perfect Bbs/Book and Disk
Published in Paperback by Que (September, 1994)
Average review score:

An excellent primer for the first-time sysop.Bulletin Board Systems (BBSs) were very popular in the days before easy Internet access, and now they're making a comeback. Mark L. Chambers' book is an excellent primer for the first-time system operator (sysop); while it comes bundled with a test-drive copy of Wildcat! (a popular DOS-based BBS package), the book is written to be useful even if you choose to use different software. While computer hardware has advanced since the book was written, that doesn't really make it obsolete since most BBSs don't require (or can't effectively use) 56K modem technology or Pentium II power; as far as the software goes, this book is about as up-to-date as you're going to find.
One caveat: while the Wildcat! Test-Drive software is fully operational, it is nowhere near as powerful as the commercial version and probably won't satisfy many serious users for long. Think of it as just what it is -- a try-before-you-buy "test drive" version that shows what Wildcat! can do but lacks some of the commercial version's features.

A Very Enjoyable Read!!!The real reason I picked up this book was because the authors first name is my own and the title character's name is my daughters!!! What a coincidence! I had never read anything by this author before but am happy to have found her! She tells a rich story, with well developed characters, romance, and this kept me turning the pages. I am anxious to read her forthcoming book available in June of 99' to continue this enchanting story. Well worth reading!!!

Spike Jones and His City Slickers: An Illustrated Biography
Published in Paperback by Past Times Pub Co (May, 1986)
Average review score:

The Historical Record of the Hysterical RecordsThis entertaining and enlightening look at 'The King of Corn' dishes up more than enough info for the curious, whether you're a die-hard fan or you're only familiar with his hits like "Cocktails For Two" and "All I Want For Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth." The author thoroughly tackles Spike's life from his childhood (when he was still known as Lindley Armstrong Jones) all the way up to his final days, with coverage of his early work as a session drummer and his many touring live shows. Interviews with several of the surviving City Slickers provide fascinating insight into the man, and three bandmates (funnyman Doodles Weaver, trumpetist George Rock, and drummer Joe Siracusa) get whole chapters dedicated to them. The pages are full of numerous B&W photos, publicity shots, album covers, promotional ads, show posters, and other Jonesiana. The last portion of the book features a thorough discography of his output, from his pre-City Slicker releases to his various 78's to his V-Discs, even including a list of rejected and unrealized projects. It details his numerous radio appearances and his work within both television and feature films. There's also an informative Who's Who section with brief bios on Jones' cohorts such as Billy Barty, Dr. Horatio Q. Birdbath, Sir Fredric Gas, Red Ingle, Freddie Morgan and Del Porter. Radio icon Dr. Demento provides a brief Foreword. Jordan R. Young has since written "Spike Jones Off the Record," an updated look at his career.

The Story of the Original Dixieland Jazz Band
Published in Hardcover by DaCapo Press (December, 1977)
Average review score:

Fills a Gap Surprisingly WellMr. Brunn had access to many of the people who make up the story of the ODJB. He talked with them personally. He helped leader and cornetist Nick LaRocca dig through his garage-ful of documents and memorabilia. He got the whole story of the band - where it played, how it made the first ever recordings of jazz, when it broke up, when it got back together, influences, how it developed its distinctive sound. He got the whole story - almost. Sadly, he chose not to address the very thing that is now so troubling about the ODJB: LaRocca's nasty comments about blacks. You could finish this book and not know a thing about those comments. It is another story to be told, I guess, and would probably take another book to tell well. But it must be told. It is a sad story, for LaRocca chooses to believe that blacks had no part in the creation or the development of jazz. And Brunn, the apologist, apparently is only too happy to buy into that myth, describing the band in the end as "the five pioneers who brought into existence the most phenomenal revolution in the annals of American music." This book will never be the final word on the ODJB, but will always be a great resource for those hungry for information from that period in our nation's musical history. And it is a great, evocative, easy read.

Teach Yourself VISUALLY iMac
Published in Paperback by Visual (September, 2000)
Average review score:

Just the basicsVery good resource for first time iMac users. I tried the "For Dummies" series, but found this book to be much easier to understand-it shows exactly what you will encounter on the computer-and what to do. Because of the visual approach, I could read and understand the book without actually following along on the computer.
